What Is a D-SNP Plan and Do You Qualify?

If you qualify for both Medicare and Medicaid, you're considered 'dual eligible' — and you have access to a special category of Medicare Advantage plans called Dual Eligible Special Needs Plans, or D-SNPs.

Most people in this situation don't know these plans exist. And most agents don't fully understand them. Here's what you need to know.

What Is a D-SNP?

A Dual Eligible Special Needs Plan (D-SNP) is a Medicare Advantage plan specifically designed for people who qualify for both Medicare and Medicaid. These plans coordinate your benefits from both programs — so you're not navigating two separate systems.

D-SNPs often include benefits that go far beyond standard Medicare coverage:

  • Grocery and food allowances
  • Transportation to medical appointments
  • Over-the-counter item allowances
  • Dental, vision, and hearing coverage
  • Utility bill assistance in some plans
  • Care coordination services

Who Qualifies for a D-SNP?

To qualify for a D-SNP in Florida, you must be enrolled in Medicare Parts A and B AND be receiving full Medicaid benefits. If you're on a Medicaid spend-down or a partial Medicaid benefit, your eligibility will depend on the specific plan and your benefit level.

This is an area where having an agent who understands both programs is critical. Medicaid eligibility rules in Florida are complex — income caps, asset limits, and spend-down requirements all affect what plans you can access.

Why Most Agents Get This Wrong

The intersection of Medicare and Medicaid is one of the most complex areas in health insurance. Most agents understand Medicare well. Very few also understand Medicaid planning — spend-down strategies, income cap rules, Miller Trusts, and Medicaid-compliant annuities.

I do. My background in elder care and Medicaid planning means I can look at your full financial and health picture — not just your Medicare options — and help you maximize every benefit you're entitled to.
